2009
Dear 2009,

Where the hell do you get off? I thought we had an agreement, I made a list of all the things that i wanted to do this year and you've been very nice and let me finish most of it. I doubt i will ever learn the piano so scrap that bit. However the last bit on my list im not happy with what you've done. I'll have less of that please, thank you very much.

I'm glad i have a nice new job and it is keeping me very busy however you piss me off again like this and we shall have words.

Regards,

Paul.

Rant
I will be honest that i am beginning to grow tired of this "recession" its taken a large amount of jobs from hardworking people. Obviously there is nothing i can do except feel sorry those people. My major problem, aside from not finding employment after a 10 months, is now, as the end of the academic year looms yet more design graduates are going to be flung into the design industry. Only to have a rather large door slammed in their faces. There are more and more graduates pouring into the design industry, and less and less jobs to be filled. Now as im waiting for a company to get in touch with me to tell me if i have, or have not got a job, im wondering what to do? I mean im not going to be able to float around indefinitely waiting for a design job to come up. At present i have had 4 job interviews, sent approx 150 - 200 job applications (averaging between 3 and 10 applications a week), and hundreds more enquiry emails (43 just yesterday) yet still no job. At present im working a few days a week at a well know supermarket, i can barely survive on that wage let alone be able to pay off my rather large student loan that i ran up taking the time to go through university. This makes me a little overqualified to man a self-scan checkout at a supermarket. Companies are closing down at a steady rate, and there seems to be no end to this falling economy, so all i can do is hold tight and hope some company likes my work and is actually willing to take a risk with a graduate and hire me. Then i can buy a new camera from lomography.

These following things have happened in the last 4 weeks:

  • The kraken typeface has been improved vastly, it looks much better for a 10 hour tidy up marathon. Updates, pictures and everything else will follow soon.

  • LTKD has begun to print my tee's and had a launch party on Friday, for pictures click here

  • I have remade my website of the third time in 4-5 weeks because I was unhappy with it. I now love it, it is based on the 960 grid system with some jquery and mootools in it.

  • I have sent 22 job applications in the last 4 weeks, i haven't had a reply from any of them.

Thought an update is in order, I had an interview for a company over in westcliff-on-sea last monday during the worst snow since ever. I managed to get there early (thankfully) and the interview went well, however i was unfortunate to not get the job. However there is a silver lining in the fact i may be able to get some freelance work from them. At the moment i'll take whatever i can get, im skint and still living on a student wage, which im partially impressed with to be honest.
Out of some form of boredom/self learning i've now redesigned my website (again) simply because i was trying to refresh the image of it. The POLAROIX gallery is being fixed with a drag n drop script once i can actually wrap my head around it all. Im still a little shaky with my web development skills, but they are slowly building up nicely. Heres a nice few screenshots of the site and remember go to twiggy8520designs.co.uk

Well lately i've rewritten my cv for about the fifth time in the past 10 months in the hope of landing a nice job. Nothing much has come out of it, but heres the fingers crossed. Luckily i have work from Let The Kids Dance and the t-shirts i've designed will hopefully be out in late feb.

I've been fighting against bezier curves and keming the last few days. If you are unfamiliar with the term keming its basically bad kerning google it for a good description. I have been working on this kraken typeface, and after spending the day on it and importing about 100ish letterforms, i released the spacing is far too tight. So i shall spend the majority of tomorrow resetting the spacing and also rescaling the current letterforms.

    I have now decided to have a look back at the last year, because i cant be bothered to make a long winded entry like last time i shall make so bullet point style list;

Beginning 2008 in the cheesiest club ever, and then standing in the cold for 40 minutes waiting for a taxi.
    Eleven Pt exhibition.
    D&AD New Blood 2008.
    A debauched week in Dublin.
22 hour coach trip to Aberdeen.
    A weekend in Aberdeen.
7 hour train trip from Aberdeen.
    Graduating from university.
Working for Slider Studio - my first freelance work.
    Action sampler cameras.
    P O L A R O I X.
    Ben and Jerry's ice cream.
Working with Let The Kids Dance.
    Selling my typefaces.
